6. You’ve got this gut feeling that there’s more to life than going to work every day
Your gut - be it a six pack or a keg - is an incredible source of wisdom and information. Lately your gut’s been telling you there’s got to be more to life than spending almost half of it indoors under fluorescent lights staring at TPS reports. Ever look around at your colleagues and wonder what their lives are like outside of the office?
I used to wonder if the especially rude people were just as snarky to their loved ones as they were to me. I’m sure you’re getting the message that working for an employer is all there is.
No, it isn’t.
The answer isn’t ‘start a business’ either. It was for me; don’t get me wrong. Yet so many people who left the rat race to start their own businesses end up creating the very same shite they tried to get away from. Womp womp.
7. You feel like you’ve outgrown your current role but there’s nowhere else for you to go in your current company
Jobs aren’t designed for people to stick around them for 30+ years like the good old days. Our parents had 1 job... maybe 2 but that’s pushing it... then retired to a far defined benefit pension. Not so much for our generation. We’re lucky if we last a few years in a job! Between outsourcing, downsizing and whatever the C-Suite has come up with to maximize shareholder profits, job security is a thing of the past. It’ll eventually come back like bell bottom pants... or so we hope.
Jobs aren’t even designed for optimal performance & productivity. Plus, succession planning is more like, just post it on Indeed or better yet, eliminate the job altogether.
You’ve been wondering for awhile if your job is actually necessary or if a primate or artificial intelligence could replace you. There’s nowhere to go but out at most companies today. You’ll need to ask yourself, Self, I gotta get out but to where?
8. You’ve been looking for another job yet that seems fruitless
So you need to get out of your current job; you decide to look for another one. You scour the job boards; secretly message people on LinkedIn praying to anyone who’s listening it doesn’t get back to your current employer; attend networking events; on and on until you realize that the new job you’re so desperately seeking is going to look and feel EXACTLY like your current job. Sure, the commute will change; you might even get a better compensation package. But instead of dealing with Marjorie the Marketing Minion, you’ll be putting up with Frank the Finance Fool’s reindeer games.
Isn’t it time to leave it all behind?
9. You get panic and anxiety attacks on Sunday nights
Supposedly Mondays are like a bad hangover without the home remedy (mine is greasy food, sports drinks and bananas in that order). Yet do you find yourself feeling like you’re drowning around 7pm on a Sunday night? All you that think about is the sheer nonsense you’re going to face first thing in the morning.
This isn’t life, lovely. Every day is truly a gift. Yet if your days are filled with dread for the next day, it’s time to do it differently. Sure, you could change your mindset towards work, but ultimately, work isn’t going to change. You must be the one to change & leave it all behind for good.
10. You may be experiencing a quasi-existential crisis
Did you know your gut feelings are practically infallible? If your gut’s telling you there’s gotta be more to life than going to a soulless job every day, then listen to your gut!
You are not your job. Your job is just something you do in exchange for money. You are a whole and complete sentient human being. You’re made of stars! It’s time to tap into the vast wisdom and knowledge deep within you to not only love yourself, but discover your true & highest Self.
